Power to Learn Laptop Computer Initiative

"The Cobb County School District is considering a plan to equip all teachers, middle and high school students with laptop computers. The district is awaiting responses from several of the largest computer manufacturers, and a proposal could be brought to the Board of Education by late September or October.

The plan, called Power To Learn, would equip teachers with laptops beginning this (2004-05) school year so that they may become acquainted with the devices and begin planning for the integration of their classroom instruction using this new technology. High school students would be provided laptops at the start of the 2005-06 school year, and middle school students would receive them later in the school year. Other school districts (see Henrico County, Va.) across the country that have equipped students with laptops have seen remarkable benefits. Students are drawn to the medium and adapt very quickly, including large numbers of students who do not have access to such technology in their homes. Some of the benefits include increased attendance, fewer discipline problems, more student engagement, more parental involvement, and higher test scores"
